Most projects start as a "side-hustle" while being employed. The moment you decide to quit your job and focus on your business full-time, the state (via your employer) stops paying your minimum contributions. This is the stage where a promising project must become a financially managed company.
When does a side hustle become a main activity?
This transition occurs on the day you stop meeting the conditions for a side activity (e.g., termination of employment, graduation). From this moment, you must:
- Notify the change: inform the District Social Security Administration (OSSZ / ČSSZ) and your health insurance company within 8 days.
- Start paying advances: while you did not have to pay advances in the first year of a side hustle, in a main activity you must pay at least the minimum advances valid for 2026 starting from the very first month.
The "turnover and VAT" trap for early-stage projects in Czechia
Many startup founders focus on revenue and forget to monitor the turnover for mandatory VAT registration. In 2026, the limit stands at 2 000 000 CZK for 12 consecutive months.
- Watch out for cumulative turnover: it is not about the calendar year, but a rolling 12-month period. At the end of each calendar month, you must sum up your income for that month and the 11 preceding months. If you exceed the limit in March, you must register by April 15th.
- Identified person: if you purchase software (SaaS), Facebook ads, or use payment gateways for your startup, you become an identified person immediately, regardless of your turnover.
What to watch out for
- Retroactive payments: if you fail to notify the transition to a main activity on time, insurance companies will charge late payment penalties, which are flagged almost instantly in 2026 due to the digitalization of tax administration.
- Tax deductibility of expenses: side hustles often use flat-rate expenses. As you move to a main activity and costs grow, switching to tax record-keeping is often more beneficial.
- Flat-rate tax: if you opt for the flat-rate tax, you must do so by January 10th of that year. If you start your business during the year, you can enter it immediately upon starting.
